Have you or do you know of anyone that has implemented an innovative and creative solution improving healthcare?
SIHI Malawi, the Social Innovation in Health Initiative at the College of Medicine, in collaboration with Malawi Ministry of Health (MOH) and TDR, Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Disease (TDR) is looking for health solutions that are supporting/ contributing to the achievement of health related SDGs in Malawi.
We want to recognise creative solutions that are contributing to making primary healthcare delivery more inclusive and affordable for Malawians.
You stand to benefit in many ways and join the global community of like-minded innovators and partners.
The Health Sector Strategic Plan II is calling for pathways to stimulate Universal Health Coverage (UHC) of quality, equitable and affordable health care for all. However, inequalities in health outcomes and health care access persist, 52% of facilities ably deliver essential health package.
We believe your innovative solution has the power to transform our health system!
We are looking for individuals – health workers, students, citizens, entrepreneurs – or organisations – NGOs, companies, universities, hospitals, government departments who have developed a creative solution to a problem in healthcare delivery.
Solutions could be a creative or innovative services, products, practice, process and policies.
You may not think your work is innovative, but if it is addressing a problem in a different way and making an impact, then your solution is innovative!
Your solution is eligible if it meets the following conditions:
Primary healthcare
Access to health and inclusive care
Quality
Affordability
Contributing to health related SDGs
Malawi
Operational for more than a 1-year. We are not looking for new ideas but existing solutions.
The solution is not a medical or scientific innovation (drugs, devices, etc) as we don’t consider this social innovation. Read more about what is a social innovation.

Top Solutions Announced
Your solution can help improve the healthcare system in Malawi and other nations. Imagine what we can achieve together. You can benefit in several ways:
Recognition by the College of Medicine, the Malawi Ministry of Health and TDR, Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Disease - hosted at the World Health Organization.
Documentation - Your solution will be studied by researchers and they will produce a case study.
Promotional video - A professional video will be produced on your solution.
Sharing - We will share your solution across Malawi as well as internationally through the SIHI Partner Network.
Learning – You will be invited to attend various workshops and learning sessions for innovators.
Community – You will become part of the growing SIHI community of innovators.
All eligible solutions will be submitted to the expert review panel and each solution will be reviewed by at least two members of the panel according to the following criteria.
The solution addresses a health priority or a perceived need in the community
The solution presents a creative, unconventional, or new approach as compared to the status quo
The solution has the potential to enhance equity and access in health, especially for the most excluded or marginalised
The solution is affordable to those excluded in the local context and presents a more cost-effective alternative as compared to the status quo
The solution has the potential to achieve a positive outcome on the health of the local population and enhances the capacities of the local population
Feasibility for the solution to be applied, replicated and scaled-up to other communities with similar problems
The solution has the possibility to be sustained and have demonstrated that they have considered issues around sustainability
A participatory approach is evident in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the solution (i.e. contributions from various stakeholders: the patients/families, local health personnel, local leaders
The solution has the potential bring transformation within the health or social system
