CONVENE & GUIDE

We promote stakeholder articulation for collaborative learning and sustainable social transformation in health

PROMOTE APPROPRIATION

We develop tools and/or mechanisms to strengthen community-based research in order to improve implementation, sustainability, and impact of Social Innovation in Health in the LAC region

OUR ACTIVITIES

Thanks to the support of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and to the collaborative work between the SIHI LAC Hub, the Honduras Hub, and PAHO, we hold calls for proposals every two years to identify and highlight social innovation initiatives to improve health in the Latin American and Caribbean region. These calls aim to make visible and promote social innovation efforts that are generating a positive and transformative impact on the health of our communities in the region.

The last call in 2023 focused on identifying and recognizing social innovations in health that have contributed significantly to closing the equity gap in access to health services. In this edition, three outstanding innovations were recognized, and two honorable mentions were awarded.

On 13 November 2024, an event on Social Innovation for the Health of Indigenous Communities was held, providing a platform for knowledge and experience exchange among representatives of nine initiatives, indigenous leaders, government sector representatives, and other strategic allies. This event fostered reflection on the challenges and opportunities to improve access to and quality of healthcare in intercultural contexts.

It also strengthened collaboration among key actors, generated valuable learning and contributed to the Hub’s objectives by promoting innovative, inclusive, and sustainable solutions that advance health equity in the region.

The regional call (crowdsourcing) for social innovations in health in the framework of the COVID-19 pandemic, led by PAHO in collaboration with LAC and Honduras hub was launched on May 26th, 2021. In June, July, August and September, we followed up and provided support to the call in terms of communications in Spanish, publications on Facebook and first filter of the evaluation process. In total, we received 128 applications from 17 countries of the LAC region, 106 of which were eligible for evaluation. From Central America and Dominican Republic, we received 13 applications from four different countries.

The standard evaluation and due process were completed with support from an independent panel of distinguished reviewers and on November 19th the 4 winners and additional for honorable mentions were announced. A winner and honorable mention were selected for each of the four geographic areas of Latin America and the Caribbean considered for the crowdsourcing call. Having winner and honorable mention innovations from each different subregion allowed strengthening the representation and awareness about social innovation in health across the region.

From July 26th to 28th we developed a 20-hour virtual workshop about community-based methodologies in alliance with the SIHI Honduras Hub in the framework of the UNAH annual scientific event named Jornada Científica / Congress of Health Sciences Research, which this year organized its 28th and 15th editions, respectively. We had the participation of 18 people interested in social transformation in health (12 from Honduras and 6 from Colombia). It specifically addressed the theoretical bases and methodological principles of Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR), Participatory Action Research (PAR), and Design Thinking. This training provided important knowledge and tools to strengthen capacities in participatory approaches to research, which are key for research in social innovation in health.

Our team of researchers visited each of the selected social innovations in Guatemala, Honduras, Colombia and Peru from the 2018-2019 innovation calls to learn more about their work. Six full-length case studies have been produced as well as short films on each of the social innovations. Learn more about the case studies below.

We have a collection of relevant scientific articles on social innovation in health written by innovators, team members, and allies of the SIHI LAC Hub. This collection offers valuable insights and knowledge about our research, projects, and experiences in the field. Delve deeper into how social innovation is transforming health in our communities here.

The Virtual Café is a bimonthly webinar organized by the Social Innovation in Health Hub for Latin America and the Caribbean (SIHI LAC Hub) with support from Honduras Hub (dissemination, moderation chat). Its main objective is to bring together people and institutions from different countries in Latin America and the Caribbean to exchange ideas and experiences of social innovation in health, and to generate a collective learning space around the topic and other related topics such as community health, digital health, crowdfunding, community-based methodologies, among others.

You can watch all our Virtual Coffee webinars here.

Social Appropriation of Knowledge (SAK) is the process by which knowledge generated by scientific research is integrated and used in society. This process, which is part of Colombian public policy, involves the active participation of the community in the creation, dissemination, and application of knowledge, promoting a two-way exchange between researchers and society to solve problems and improve quality of life.

SAK and social innovation are closely related. This is why we have strengthened our capacities in SAK through various activities such as research, participation in diverse courses, and the organization of introductory workshops.

As a result, we have co-created with some of the communities where we work pedagogical materials that have been designed to be accessible, useful, and relevant, to promote health in those communities.

These are some of the products we have developed:

Educational manual for leaders and communities “Prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis”.

Pedagogical guide – Set of cards and educational activities for the prevention of cutaneous leishmaniasis from the communities.

Radionovela “Zumbidos del Rio” (River Buzz).

Collaborative work and the search for alliances are central aspects of Social Innovation in Health which, as a hub, we seek to develop continuously. Over the years, SIHI LAC has strengthened its partnerships with key institutions such as PAHO, ICESI University, the Antonio Vidal Institute of Infectious Diseases and Parasitology (IAV) of Honduras, the University of Antioquia, and TecSalud, among others. These strategic collaborations allow us to continue making a positive impact in the region and building solid ties to promote social innovation.

Articulating and reinforcing social innovation in health and intersectional gender research

CIDEIM/TDR advanced an intersectional project on gender and social innovation in May 2022, entitled “Intersection of gender with other social stratifies in the prevention and control of infectious diseases in indigenous and black communities of Pueblo Rico”.

The project seeks to understand how gender dynamics operate and the interaction between gender and known social stratifiers. It will explore the role for social innovations for health to address infectious disease among the participating communities, and aims to promote gender equality and inclusion.

With the support of TDR, the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases,co-sponsored by UNICEF, UNDP, the World Bank and WHO, our work on the intersection of social innovation in health and gender began in 2021 with an exploratory study on the presence of gender dimensions among previously identified social innovations in health in the LAC region. From this point, we received funding to conduct a study on participation in health initiatives among ethnic communities in Pueblo Rico, Risaralda, Colombia. This multi-faceted project began with a qualitative data synthesis on previous studies exploring barriers and facilitators to participation in health initiatives among women in ethnic groups in Latin America.

From there, we conducted a research study that resulted in a scientific manuscript on the barriers to participation in social innovation in health initiatives in Pueblo Rico among ethnic groups based on the JHPIEGO gender analysis framework. This project also involved capacity strengthening activities for both the research team and the community members on the intersection of gender with other social stratifiers, and how this influences the ability of community members to participate freely in social innovation in health initiatives.

Our work in gender is sure to have a lasting impact on our hub and other recognized regional social innovations in health because we ensure that the health interventions and research studies we carry out are responsive and inclusive, facilitating the participation of all community members.

SIHI LAC has participated in various national and international events to showcase its efforts in social innovation in health.

In 2024, our hub participated in Catalysing Change Week, organized by Catalyst 2030. During this meeting, we joined colleagues from more than 120 countries to build an efficient social innovation system, and presented on “Social Innovation in Health as a Catalyst for Change.” From our hub, María Isabel Echavarría Mejía, Diana Maria Castro, and Luis Gabriel Cuervo Amore shared local initiatives that are transforming the healthcare landscape in the region.

Watch the session here.

In addition, SIHI LAC and our allies, including the Honduras node and PAHO, have organized meetings to foster collaborative work and cross-learning. The latest meeting, sponsored by PAHO, was held in Washington D.C., where the three outstanding innovations of the PAHO-SIHI LAC 2023 Call for Proposals were awarded and central elements of social innovation in health were discussed. View the event report here

Recognizing that social innovation in health contributes significantly to health equity, and thanks to the support of PAHO, the SIHI LAC Hub developed a Compendium of Cases through a participatory process involving leaders and team members from 17 innovations recognized by SIHI LAC.

The document highlights the potential of social innovation to promote equity, address the determinants of health, and improve access to health for communities in the Americas.

Through a variety of initiatives, this product demonstrates the power and contribution of community solutions that combine innovative approaches to advance health equity and promote social justice in the region.

The compendium is still under revision, but a preliminary version is presented here.
