Over the past four years, the SIHI Hubs in Malawi, Uganda, the Philippines and the Latin America region have been active in supporting the creation of an enabling environment for social innovation in their countries. We have captured some of the practical learning they have gained in implementing various activities.
The purpose of this interactive guide is to provide a monitoring and evaluation framework for social innovations in health. The guide includes a step-by-step process for monitoring and evaluation, a conceptual framework, considerations for assessing hackathons, social innovation contacts, and open access resources.
In 2017, SIHI Philippines launched their first crowdsourcing call to identify social innovations in health in the Philippines. In a mere 2-years, a strong partnership has been established with the Philippines Council for Health Research and Development. Through this partnership, the process of identifying social innovations in health is now being embedded and institutionalised as part and parcel of the national health research system in the Philippines. The Gelia Castillo Award for Research on Social Innovations in Health will provide national recognition for social innovations that have improved the health of Filipinos.
This blog describes the process that lead to the creation of this national award and the shares some of the lessons learned in this journey.

In 2018-19, three SIHI hubs have actively been responding to the capacity building needs of their social innovators and stakeholders. Each hub focused on addressing different capacity building needs: research, communication and entrepreneurship. Through employing different capacity building mechanisms, hubs not only contributed and enhanced their innovators and stakeholders’ confidence and skills, but they have also been able to build new partnerships with key partners. Capacity building workshops for social innovators raise their local profile and contribute to advancing social innovation in healthcare in their countries.
This blog describes the different capacity-building mechanisms used by SIHI hubs from Malawi, Uganda and the Latin America and Caribbean region. It also shares feedback from the interviews conducted with social innovators and captures les- sons for further consideration by hubs when conducting capacity building activities.
