SIHI Nigeria at Nnamdi Azikiwe University

Nnamdi Azikiwe University: Our mission is to use teaching, research and public service to solve societal problems in Nigeria.

Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka Nigeria, is one of the federal universities overseen and accredited by the National Universities Commission. The mission of Nnamdi Azikiwe University is to use teaching, research and public service to solve societal problems in Nigeria. The University is regarded as a community-based university and hence has linkages with various stakeholders e.g. policymakers in the state where it is located. The university has a keen interest in social entrepreneurship, and is involved in small scale industrial capacity building. Even though social innovation is still at a nascent stage, there is strong interest in engaging both students and staff in social innovation to address health care delivery issues.

OUR ACTIVITIES

In the fourth quarter of 2025, the Social Innovation in Health Initiative Nigeria, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, designed and implemented a national innovation identification call addressing nutrition, food security, and child health priorities. The call titled Cost effective indigenous innovations to strengthen complementary feeding for children under five years in Nigerian communities was launched in August 2025 and closed in September 2025. Following the close of the call, eligibility screening and shortlisting were conducted by the Social Innovation in Health Initiative Nigeria team based on predefined criteria. Technical grading was subsequently undertaken by an independent expert committee comprising nine members, ensuring transparency, rigor, and alignment with standard crowdsourcing and open call procedures. Among the shortlisted applicants, female innovators accounted for 8 (61.5%), while male innovators comprised 5 (38.5%). Most innovators were aged 31 to 45 years. Geographically, the innovations were diverse, with the highest representation from the South West with 6 submissions (46.2%), followed by the South East with 3 (23.1%), North Central with 2 (15.4%), and North West with 2 (15.4%). The innovators represented a diverse institutional mix, including universities and research institutions 5 (38.5%), social enterprises and private sector organisations 4 (30.8%), government or public agencies 2 (15.4%), and civil society organisations 2 (15.4%).

For Q4 2025: SIHI Nigeria completed Deliverable 1 and 3, with case study research and reports finalised and updated to fully integrate a gender lens. A manuscript was also developed from this work. For Deliverable 3, the Gender Assessment and Monitoring Guide was applied, data analysis was completed, and both a technical report and a manuscript were developed. These outputs strengthen institutional learning and contribute to the global SIHI evidence base on gender responsive social innovation.

Q4 2025: The Hub sustained partnership building and advocacy at institutional, national, and international levels, with a focus on health, nutrition, and gender responsive social innovation. These engagements reinforced alignment with national priorities, strengthened existing partnerships, and positioned the hub to support innovation implementation in 2026.

SIHI Nigeria Hub in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation organized a virtual café with the theme of “Innovations to improve access to healthcare for young people in Nigeria”. The programme featured presentations from three social innovators, two of whom were identified by the Hub. It also featured a breakroom session for participants and at the end, all participants presented some potential barriers and possible strategies to resolve perceived problems regarding the theme of the programme.
